Martin Smith is a very, very happy man, after bagging himself a February unit from his southern syndicate water.
The capture came on the final morning of his weekend session and was just desserts for all his hard work moving swims and finding a spot amongst a seemingly impregnable lakebed of weed.
With his favoured 12mm Milky Malt pop-ups fished over a bed of Bug boilies, Martin’s trap was triggered by one of the lake’s largest inhabitants, an absolute chunk of a mirror known as Paw Print at 47lb 2oz.
Martin said: “I woke up on the first morning of my session and saw 20-plus shows at the other side of the lake, so decided to move at first light.
“After leading about for three hours to find a spot in what was a very, very weedy part of the lake, I finally found a small bivvy-sized clear area at 26 wraps and placed three rods tight together, all baited with 12mm Milky Malt pop-ups. Over the top went 15 Spombs of crushed and 12mm Bug boilies.
“I noticed some fizzing on the spot at first light on the second morning. Shortly after, the bobbin on the middle rod pulled up tight and I was in! A 25-minute battle ensued, before finally a fish called Paw Print was in the net, all 47lb 2oz of it.
“I was absolutely buzzing with this February chunk.”
