Steve Haylett got back amongst the big ’uns during his latest visit to the Monks Pit syndicate in Cambridgeshire, capping his trip with a 40lb 10oz mirror.
“Turning up to a very moody lake, I was told the weekend didn’t produce a single carp,” said Steve
“If this was true, it was going to be hard going! With little to go on, I chose a swim that had the least amount of angling pressure. My starting tactics were solid bags consisting of Crayfish wafters and matching Crayfish Mini Mix pellets, injected with Hemp Oil. With nothing really showing, I wasn’t surprised to have a good night’s sleep!
“Come the second morning, I was on the move when a swim became available mid-water and there were a few signs of carp, so I got set up ASAP. The tactic this time was to introduce a fair bit of bait, consisting of different-sized Secret 7 crumbed and whole boilies, Secret 7 and Crayfish Maxi Mix pellets, and corn, all soaked in Molasses, Hemp Oil and S7 Liquid Food.
“At 12am, the middle rod on a Secret 7 bottom bait tipped with a PB pop-up was away, but sadly it came off shortly after. I decided to make a tweak and put out a PB pop-up on a hinged stiff rig and four hours later it was away! This fish felt good and after a 20-minute battle a mirror of 41lb 10oz slipped over the net cord!
“Apart from a tench, this was to be my only action for the night, but the move had paid off already!
“With 24 hours still in front of me, I opted to put all rods on the same PB pop-ups. Come nightfall, with the spots regularly topped up with my bait mix, I got my head down. At first light, the same rod was off again! With no dramas, a common of around 32lb was in my arms and up for the camera. A great result and a very happy angler!”
