The Best Carp Fishing Baits to Use In Summer
Summer is without doubt one of my favourite times to be out on the bank. Longer days, warmer water temperatures and more stable weather mean conditions are primed for carp fishing. Once the fish have finished spawning, they’re actively on the hunt for food to replenish their energy and repair their bodies – and that’s where the right bait can make all the difference.
Why Summer Carp Fishing Is So Productive
With increased water temperatures and an abundance of natural food sources, carp are often more active and feeding more confidently than at any other time of year. Whether you’re fishing in the margins, up in the water with zigs, off the top, or out in open water, summer gives you the flexibility to try a wide range of tactics.
However, success always starts with location. Spend time looking for signs of carp – bubbling, jumping, coloured water – and focus your efforts on shallower areas, margins, islands, reedbeds, and thriving weedbeds where the carp feel safe and warm.
Once you’ve found them, here are my go-to bait options to help you make the most of summer carp fishing.
Boilies: A Summer Essential
Fishmeal boilies come into their own in summer. Baits like Secret 7 (S7) and SLK are rich in proteins and amino acids, making them highly attractive during the warmer months. I recommend using a mix of shapes and sizes – including crumb, chops and whole boilies – to keep the carp guessing and confidently feeding.
Oils and Liquids: Boost Your Attraction
In warm water, oils and liquids disperse far more effectively. A simple tip is to coat your baits in a liquid like Red Shrimp Hydro, giving off a strong scent trail that draws carp in from a distance. Whether you’re glazing boilies, soaking pellets or adding a shot to your spod mix, liquids are a key edge in summer.
Pellets: High-Oil, High-Protein Powerhouses
Pellets are ideal for summer because of their high oil and protein content. Products like our Omega-XTR Duo pellets leak attraction instantly and continuously, sending out strong food signals in the water. I love to use pellets in PVA bags, especially when dropping them into holes in the weed – a deadly summer tactic.
Particles: Keep ‘Em Digging
From hemp and maize to maples and chickpeas, particles are great at holding fish in your swim for longer. Their variety in size and texture mimics natural food sources and keeps carp grubbing around. Maples and chickpeas are especially good at taking on flavours and liquids, turning them into mini boilies packed with attraction.
Tiger Nuts: A Sweet, Crunchy Edge
Tiger nuts are a classic summer bait. Naturally sweet and crunchy, they’re incredibly appealing to carp and great for avoiding nuisance species. They also work really well in a spod mix or as a single hookbait. Just make sure they’re properly prepared, and for an added edge, soak them in Tiger Nut Extract.
Floaters: Surface Action at its Best
Catching carp off the top is one of the most exciting ways to fish in summer. Warm, sunny conditions often see the fish patrolling just below the surface. I like to feed a handful of BetaStim Floaters, then use a matching hookbait and subtle surface rig to tempt them. When it goes right, it’s proper heart-in-mouth stuff!
Natural Bats: Match the Hatch
Insects, worms, maggots and casters are thriving in lakes during the summer, so it makes sense to present similar food items. While they might attract smaller fish, in rich or weedy waters, natural baits can be the key to outwitting wary carp.
