Carp Fishing at Night: 8 Top Tips

There’s something truly special about carp fishing at night. Once you’ve spent a night on the bank, you’ll never look back. Watching the sun burst through the trees at dawn, birdsong filling the air and a steaming mug of tea in hand – especially with a carp waiting in the retainer – is pure magic! Equally, as the sun dips below the horizon and you set your traps for the night ahead, there’s that electric feeling of knowing that at any moment, the carp could turn up on your bait.

Over the years, I’ve fine-tuned my approach to make the most of every overnight session. Whether you’re fishing in the depths of winter or on a balmy summer evening, these eight top tips will help you catch more fish and enjoy your time on the bank even more.

Night-time can be prime time for catching carp

1. Keep Warm in Winter

When night fishing in the colder months, the number one rule is to keep warm. Layer up with proper thermal clothing, keep a warm brew handy, and avoid using bivvy heaters for safety reasons. Staying comfortable means you can concentrate on your fishing, not your freezing toes.

2. Bring a Good Battery Pack

A reliable battery pack is essential. It keeps your head torch, phone and even a tablet or laptop charged if you like to watch films or do a bit of work from the bank. Winter nights can be long, but with quiet banks and carp in peak condition, it’s one of my favourite times to be out.

3. Pack Plenty of Food and Drink

Having enough food and water makes a huge difference to your night-fishing experience. When you’re starting out, you’ll probably bring too much, but that’s better than not enough. You can always fine-tune your kit after a few trips.

4. Invest in a Quality Head Torch

A good head torch not only keeps you safe moving around at night but also helps you spot carp activity – as long as you’re careful not to disturb other anglers.

5. Listen for Carp and Be Ready to Move

Once you’re settled in for the night, especially in autumn and winter, keep your ears open. Hearing a carp crash in the darkness can be the clue you need to move. I’ve been known to move swims up to three times in one night if it means getting on the fish.

6. Get an Early Night in Summer

In summer, prime bite time on most lakes is at first light – sometimes as early as 4am. Getting your head down early means you’ll be sharp and ready when the alarms sound, rather than bleary-eyed and missing takes.

7. Put Rods Out After Dark

It might sound unusual, but I often cast my rods out after dark. This means my hookbaits are going in fresh when the carp are less pressured. I’ll find my spots in daylight, clip up and then put the bait out at night – whether that’s with a Spomb or throwing stick. It works for me time and time again.

8. Match Your Tactics to the Season

Winter – Find the carp and drop a bright one in the zone. DNA Baits’ Fruitylicious or The Bug Half Tones pop-ups have caught me countless big cold-water carp.
Spring – I bait heavily with Secret 7 boilies and particles, sometimes up to 3kg a night, and never rule out zigs. DNA’s Intense Boosters add extra attraction to your foam.
Summer – On overnighters, I go for solid bags and little traps with match-the-hatch Bug Corker wafters, or S7. For longer summer sessions, SLK is my go-to big-fish bait.
AutumnCalanus Hydro with The Bug has been a consistent winner for me year after year.

Night fishing offers a completely different side to carp angling. With the right preparation, the correct bait, and tactics tailored to the season, you can turn those hours of darkness into some of your most memorable sessions. So get out there, enjoy the magic of the night and, hopefully, land yourself a few special fish along the way.
