Expert Tips for Carp Fishing Deep Lakes

Fishing deep lakes can feel daunting at first, but with the right approach, they can be just as rewarding as any other water. My 2023 and 2024 seasons were spent targeting a farmer’s irrigation reservoir in the Fens.

The lake itself wasn’t huge at around 17 acres, but apart from a reed line and a sudden marginal shelf that dropped straight into its uniform 22-foot depth, it was pretty featureless. Fishing such an environment taught me a lot, and I want to share some of those lessons here.

1. Watch Before You Decide

I always recommend walking the lake before setting up. Look for signs of feeding fish – shows, fizzing, or movement – before choosing your swim. On big, deep waters, location really is everything.

2. Pay Attention to the Wind

Wind direction plays a huge part in where the carp will hold up. Just like on shallower lakes, the wind can push fish into certain areas, whether they’re following it to feed or sitting on the back of it to bask.

3. Work Out the Feeding Times

On my lake, most of the bites came between 10am and last light. I believe this was linked to the depth and water temperature. Once I realised this, I made sure to refresh my rigs and top up the swim a few hours before the feeding spell, giving everything time to settle.

4. Settle Your Lines

Line lay is crucial. I’d tighten to the rig and then carefully pay out around six feet of slack, allowing the line to sink in stages. This helped keep it pinned to the bottom without tangling or bowing too much in the tow.

5. Carry a Range of Lead Sizes

Deep, windswept lakes can create strong undertow, which can drag rigs off the spot. For that reason, I always carried leads up to 6oz to make sure I could hold bottom effectively.

6. Keep Pop-Ups Buoyant

At 20 feet down, water pressure soon saps the buoyancy from standard pop-ups. To counter this, I added cork to mine to ensure they stayed perfectly balanced over long periods.

7. Always Feel the Lead Down

This is still important in deep water, but patience is key. Don’t move the rod too quickly – let the lead reach bottom properly, or you risk dragging the rig way off your spot without realising.

8. Use the Swing-Back Method

Accuracy is everything. I used a marker float to find my distance, then cast the spod rod to it to ensure I was baiting directly over my rigs. This small adjustment made a big difference.

9. Adjustable Zigs Are a Must

Casting six-foot (or longer) hooklinks is a nightmare, especially in wind. Adjustable zigs make life much easier and are deadly for finding feeding fish at different depths.

10. Make Your Bait Heavy

When spodding in 20 feet of water, bait can spread a lot. To combat this, I bound my mixes with boilie crumb in SLK and The Bug and liquids, such as the Hydro Spod Syrups. This helped everything sink together and land tightly around the rig.

11. Keep Records of Every Session

I logged everything: air pressure, wind speed, wind direction, moon phase, and spots I caught from. Over time, patterns began to appear that gave me an edge for future trips.

Final Thoughts

Deep lakes can be intimidating at first, but there’s no need to fear them. Carp live there just like anywhere else and will happily feed when conditions are right – even in the middle of a hot summer’s day.

By focusing on line lay, accuracy, and bait presentation, you can turn daunting waters into consistent carp-catchers. Stick with it, be observant, and don’t be afraid to adapt – deep lakes hold incredible rewards.
