Kane Nelson is already having a very prosperous autumn, having recently taken his good form on the Approach Fisheries in West Yorkshire over to Old Mill Lakes in Lincolnshire, where he bagged himself a new personal best!
The 41-year-old from York was fishing an out-of-sorts Willow Lake with a group of friends and had struggled for the first two nights, until his PB pop-up was picked up by a 36lb 12oz mirror, earning himself a new UK PB and a bucket of water for good measure!
“I very nearly didn’t make the trip,” admitted Kane, “as I’d just started coming down with some sort of flu-like virus the night before.
“When we arrived, we drew straws for the pick of the swims and I came out second. The lake had reportedly been fishing hard, with very little coming out and most anglers blanking.
“Two nights passed by with nothing from anyone in our group until I received the strangest of bites. I was watching the lake when the right-hand rod bobbin pulled up tight, like an aggressive liner. It seemed to hang there for about 10 seconds, which felt like an eternity, and then line slowly began to peel off the spool. I was fishing three rod-lengths out at the bottom of the shelf and the fish came up to the surface quicker than expected. I soon slid the net under what appeared to be a stunning autumnal, orange-looking mirror. I shouted to the lads and everyone gathered round for the weighing and photos.
“It was to be a new UK mirror personal best for me, as the scales went round to 36lb 12oz. One of my best pals said, ‘You know what’s happening now!’ A good old soaking followed after we took some snaps on the camera. There is nothing better than sharing these moments with your pals.
“Only two bites were had in three nights across four anglers, with the other being a 34lb 8oz mirror for Tom.”
Kane’s PB pop-up was fished inside a solid bag of Crayfish Mini Mix pellets over of mixture of chopped, crumbed and whole Bug, Secret 7 and SLK boilies that he had soaked in Calanus Hydro and Hydro Wheat.
