Making the right choice

Choosing the right venues and the right swims can often be the difference between success and failure at this time of year.

When Alex Molloy from Preston visited Clearwater Fisheries at the weekend for a 48-hour session, he made sure he got in an area with winter form and, though the conditions were challenging, was rewarded for getting his selection bang on.

The 25-year-old said: “A weekend trip to Clearwater fisheries saw me on peg two, which has some winter form, as it is a deep area of the lake and a large clear area.

“Clipping all three rods at 12 wraps, I baited a small tight area of crushed SLK boilies, Crayfish Mini Mix pellets, a dash of corn and a good helping of Fish Hydro, with three different combinations over the top, a PB wafter, an SLK wafter and a Milky Malt pop-up.

“There were very few signs of movement, with strong winds making it difficult to see any indications. However, on the Saturday morning, the middle rod on the PB wafter burst into life! After a short battle, a lovely 28lb mirror called Three Scale was in the net.

“Speaking to the bailiff, the big mirror was last caught at 25lb, so evidently it hadn’t seen the bank for a while, a true testament to the SLK boilies and PB hookbaits.”
