Before Grenvilles closed for its annual break, Paul Bent signed off with a nine-fish catch on his beloved Secret 7, making up for what had otherwise been a challenging spring on the Cambridgeshire syndicate.

Paul said: “After juggling a few work commitments, I managed to get down to Grenvilles for the last few nights of the season. Upon arrival, the news from the lake wasn’t great. The spring had fished desperately slow at times and some of the famous early-spring hits had failed to materialise, but my luck was in and I managed to drop into peg 22, which I felt offered me the best opportunity in the conditions.

“This area is predominantly a short-range fishing area, so you can bait heavily, quickly and accurately. I went with my usual approach, a mix of 12mm and 15mm S7 that I glazed in matching glug. Given how slow the fishing had been, I just fished for a bite, despite everything looking perfect for more than one! I went with about 100 freebies per rod and a matching S7 Corker wafter over the top.

“The action was steady throughout the session. The fish were on the munch without ever fully letting their guard down, so with each bite another 100/200 baits were introduced on to the spots. I finished up with nine extra-special young Grenvilles fish, with three over 30lb and the rest upper twenties. The trusty S7 coming good yet again.”
