Despite turning up to a mostly frozen Festival Carp Fishery, Garth Flynn would go on to experience one of his best-ever winter sessions!

After a blank first night, Garth then moved swims as the lake began to thaw and managed to get on the fish, landing seven in the space of 24 hours, including his first thirty of the year!

Garth said: “I arrived at Festival at around midday on Thursday. The lake was all but frozen apart from pegs one, two and 12, so I opted to jump in peg one for 24 hours, a peg that’s normally good for a bite this time of year.

“By the next morning I hadn’t even received a bleep, but I wasn’t surprised given the conditions. The whole lake was well on its way to becoming fishable, so I carried my gear over to peg 11, which was the original swim I had booked on. At 2pm the first rod went out and what ensued was one of my best winter sessions to date!

“If you can keep warm and stay comfortable during the cold weather, it may be a bit more challenging but the rewards are definitely still there to be had. I ended the session on seven fish, which included my first 30-pounder of the year!”

All Garth’s fished succumbed to Bug dumbbell Corker wafters, which he fished on fluorocarbon D-rigs over a couple of a handfuls of 15mm Bug and SLK freebies, focusing on fishing for a bite at a time.
