Lewis King confesses it may be some time before he catches a better-looking fish than the one that broke his personal best during his latest visit to his Essex syndicate.
The 26-year-old construction worker set a new PB of 35lb 10oz with the capture of the distinctive fish, which is also the largest mirror carp in the lake.
Lewis said: “After getting down the syndicate at midday on Friday and having a walk around, there wasn’t much to go off, what with the high temperature and high pressure. Knowing there was a weather change due the next morning, I jumped in a swim that looked decent for it.
“The night came round and after a weird occurrence on the left-hander, I wasn’t happy and thought I’d been done, so with that I redid the rod and got it back out to my marker in the dark on a short hinged stiff, introducing seven Spombs of Secret 7 and corn.
“As morning came, the weather changed and it looked bang on for it. I was surprised I didn’t have a bite earlier, but I was quietly confident, so sat on the rods and hoped for it to happen. It was 8am and I was sitting behind my rods watching the water, as I was fishing locked up tight to the island. Two bleeps later, the rod tip started twitching and then the reel smashed straight into the alarm! I picked up into it and knew it was a good fish. The lead had been ejected on the take, but the fish stayed deep the whole time in 20ft of water. After a hairy 20 minutes, it went in the net and to say I was ecstatic would be an understatement. It was the Big Mirror and a new PB for me, coming in at a healthy spawned-out weight of 35lb 10oz. I think I’ll struggle to catch a nicer-looking fish than this one anytime soon.”
The hookbait that did the business was a 15mm Secret 7 Half Tones pop-up, which Lewis presented over his mixture of Secret 7 and corn.
