What is a hookbait? A hookbait is a specially crafted bait designed to be attached to your rig, acting as the irresistible focal point. Unlike loosefeed or freebies, hookbaits are typically more robust and durable, staying on the hook longer to withstand pecks from smaller fish and ensure they remain effective in the water.

At DNA Baits, our hookbaits are precision-made to not only match but enhance your baiting approach. Whether you prefer balanced wafters, ultra-buoyant pop-ups, or super-attractive hardened hookbaits, each option is loaded with potent attractors to draw fish in quickly and keep them interested.

How do I choose the right hookbait size? The right hookbait size depends on factors like fish size, fishing conditions and your rig set-up. Generally, larger hookbaits (15mm, 18mm and 22mm) work well for bigger fish and when avoiding smaller species, while smaller hookbaits (10mm and 12mm) are ideal for pressured waters or finesse presentations. Matching your hookbait size to your hook and balancing it with your rig will help improve presentation and hook-holds.

When should I use coloured hookbaits? Coloured hookbaits can be highly effective when you want to grab a fish’s attention quickly, especially in murky water, over silt, or when fishing over a spread of matching freebies. Bright hookbaits, like fluoro pop-ups, work well in winter or when fish are feeding cautiously, while more subtle colours (match the hatch) can be ideal for pressured waters where fish may be wary of overly bold baits.
