The journey of The Bug began in 2017 when EU legislation approved the use of Processed Animal Proteins (PAP) from insects in aquaculture feed. This marked a turning point in sustainable bait production, allowing the use of insect-based proteins for the first time.

Partnering with a reputable Black Soldier Fly meal producer, we identified a high-quality, consistent meal that met our exacting standards. Although they were a relatively new biotech company, their ethics and technical expertise were exceptional, giving us confidence in their production methods.

The Science Behind The Bug’s Insect Meal

Our meal producer uses a substrate derived from brewing industry byproducts, which allows precise control over the fat and protein levels in the final product. Unlike standard insect meals with high-fat content (35-40%), we opted for a defatted meal, ensuring:

  • Higher protein levels (compared to traditional insect meals).
  • The ability to balance omega-3 levels by adding oils during production.

This process results in a bait that delivers optimal nutrition for carp while remaining environmentally sustainable.

Unique Ingredients for Unmatched Attraction

In addition to the core functional ingredients found in all our baits, The Bug incorporates several standout components:

  1. Poultry Meat Hydrolysate (Powdered and Liquid):
    • Provides a unique savoury profile distinct from widely used liver hydrolysates.
    • Incredibly soluble, fat-free and rich in free amino acids, stimulating fish’s olfactory and gustatory receptors.
  2. Powdered Fermented Maize Hydrolysate:
    • Enhances palatability and solubility.
    • Adds a deliciously distinct taste to the bait.
  3. Microscopic Crustacean Extract:
    • A sustainable alternative to krill and fish proteins.
    • Rich in free amino acids, ensuring maximum attraction.

A Unique Flavour Profile

The Bug surprises people with its unexpected creamy, chocolate-malt aroma – a far cry from what you’d expect from an insect-based bait. This is achieved using:

  • A creamy, powdered taste enhancer.
  • A proven flavour blend used successfully across our range for years.

The result? A nutty, creamy taste that carp find irresistible – and anglers love.

Cutting-Edge Ingredients, Old-School Feel

While The Bug incorporates innovative, sustainable ingredients, it retains an old-school charm, giving anglers confidence in its appeal. Carp can’t resist it, and you’ll see the results for yourself.

Note on Insect Meal Colour Changes

Due to variations in production processes and the substrate fed to larvae, the colour of insect meal can change throughout the year. This may affect the appearance of products containing insect meal, but rest assured, the quality remains consistent.

A Sustainable, Proven Bait Carp Love

Combining cutting-edge science with time-tested effectiveness, The Bug is revolutionising bait production while ensuring incredible results for anglers.
