Steve Haylett’s fine run of success on Monks Pit continued with a further three thirties gracing his net as part of a six-fish catch on the Cambridgeshire syndicate venue.
“After navigating a very bad crash on the A14, I arrived down the Pit a bit later than expected, and with a handful of anglers on, I decided to do a night in a swim called the Car Park and then assess things the next morning,” said Steve.
“I knew a couple of spots on the edge of the kelp weed, so baited up with eight Spombs straight away, then with another five just on dusk. My mix consisted of both Crayfish Mini Mix and Crayfish Maxi Mix pellets, mixed-sized whole Secret 7 boilies, lots of S7 crumb, Molasses and Secret 7 Liquid Food. I then added Secret 7 Hydro Spod Syrup to each Spomb when baiting up.
“After a couple of quick bites that produced smaller carp, my next bite came in the dark and I needed to go out in the boat to land it. A short fight ensued, before I slipped the net under a beautiful 35lb 15oz mirror.
“One more small one followed before the sun came up the next morning. Even though I’d had four carp, I needed to move to get a better angle with more options. I settled into my new swim and sadly lost one in the kelp within three hours, but it was a bite and my confidence was high.
“Later that day I managed another lovely mirror at 30lb 5oz, another victim of my slip-D rigs baited with Secret 7 Corker wafters tipped with flecks of PB wafters.
“The next day I landed another cracker of 35lb 8oz, taking my tally to three thirties for the session.
“I’ve been very lucky this year to have caught so many stunning Monks Pit carp and the run seems to be continuing. I could not have more confidence using any of the DNA range; it’s done me so well at home and abroad!”
