Five Reasons to Love Winter Carp Fishing
As the days grow shorter, the temperatures drop and many anglers begin to scale back their time on the bank, winter carp fishing is just getting started for me. In fact, it’s my favourite time of year to target big carp, and here’s why.

My first session of 2025, part of a January forties brace caught on S7 wafters in solid bags of Crayfish Mini Mix pellets boosted with S7 Amino Smoke
1. Quieter Banks
While plenty of anglers claim they’ll fish right through winter, the reality is that once those long, cold nights set in, the banks become much quieter. That can be a huge advantage.
With fewer anglers around, you’ll have more freedom to move swims, explore those no-man’s-land areas and even change venues entirely if needed. Day-ticket waters, which can be near impossible to book in summer, are far more accessible in winter too.
In colder conditions, location is everything. Less pressure means more opportunities to track down signs of carp and capitalise when you find them.
2. It’s Easier Than You Think
Approach winter carp fishing with a positive mindset and you might be surprised at how productive it can be. In fact, many venues relax their rules in the colder months, offering extra advantages such as:
-
Additional rods (e.g. four rods from November to March).
-
The use of bait boats or natural baits like maggots and worms.
-
Longer consecutive night sessions.
As for the carp themselves, they become more predictable. With weedbeds dying back and natural food sources depleting, they spend longer in certain areas. While the feeding windows may be shorter, once you find them, multiple captures in quick succession are possible with stealth, accurate rigs and sensible baiting.

A simple PVA bag of Crayfish Mini Mix pellets and a PB wafter was all it took to trip up this 52lb 4oz winter chunk
3. Winter Means Big Carp
There’s something extra special about landing a big winter carp. Not only are the fish often at their peak weight and condition, but their colours are also deeper and darker thanks to the cold-water clarity.
Looking back through my catch records, I realised just how productive winter has been for me: out of 63 UK carp over 40lb, 32 were caught between mid-November and the end of March. My two biggest commons and six of my seven biggest mirrors also came during this period.
For me, there’s no doubt – winter is prime time for targeting monsters.
4. DNA Baits Work All Year Round
A common question I see is: “What bait works best in winter?” Truthfully, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but since switching to DNA Baits in 2012, I’ve had total confidence in using their baits all year round.
-
Secret 7 remains my go-to fishmeal boilie, and it’s just as effective in the cold.
-
The Bug (insect meal) and The Switch (veg protein) are both excellent alternatives.
In winter, I adapt my approach by using more crumbed boilie, mixed with Crayfish Mini and Maxi Mix Pellets, which maximise attraction without overfeeding the swim. I also like to add matching Hydro Spod Syrups, with Crayfish being a personal favourite.
For hookbaits, I rely on barrel-shaped wafters – PB’s, Crayfish and S7 Half Tones – often presented with a small PVA bag of pellets and sometimes boosted with S7 Amino Smoke. When bites are scarce, a single PB wafter or pop-up fished in isolation can be deadly.
5. Relaxing and Rewarding
Yes, winter fishing can seem a little mad – sitting through freezing nights, biting winds and the occasional blizzard – but it can also be incredibly relaxing and rewarding.
The action often comes during the day, meaning longer, warmer nights in the bag. With the bivvy door open, you can enjoy crisp winter sunrises, fewer insects, fresher food supplies and even the company of a friendly robin hopping into your swim.
When the rods finally rattle off, the sense of achievement is unbeatable. Every carp feels more hard-earned and more memorable in winter.
Final Thoughts
For me, winter carp fishing ticks every box: quieter banks, more consistent carp behaviour and a genuine shot at some of the biggest fish in the lake. With the right mindset and the right bait, there’s no reason why you can’t make this season your most productive yet.
So, wrap up warm, stock up on your DNA favourites and embrace the magic of cold-water carping.
Winter fishing – what’s not to love?
